Dublin coast warning as conditions set to be even more dangerous with weather warning in place

Dublin's coastline is set to be even more dangerous than yesterday when high waves battered some of the capital's most popular spots.

There was flooding across many parts of Dublin, including most of Dun Laoghaire beside the coastline, and even on the M50 where part of the road was shut.

Last night, the Irish Coast Guard stationed at Dun Laoghaire gave an important warning to the public about when the tide will be low and high, how cold the sea will be and how dangerous gale conditions can be.

A weather warning for snow and ice is in place in Dublin until 6pm, while the entire country is under a weather advisory for "very unsettled" weather with wet and windy conditions.

The Coast Guard said: "Similar weather conditions experienced today are to be expected tomorrow. Gales, swells and large tides! PLEASE DO NOT TAKE UNDUE RISKS.

"Remember if you see anyone in difficulty in, or near the water, dial 112/999 immediately and ask for the Coast Guard."

They warned:

  • Sunday’s High Tide: 13:00hrs. This will be greater than today’s tide making all piers unsafe.
  • Sunday’s Low Tide: 19:00hrs. This will force swimmers further out of harbours and into the bay, especially in areas such as Sandycove, increasing the danger.
  • Dublin’s Current Sea temperature: 6 degrees. This rapidly decreases swimmers endurance.
  • Swimming in gales, with breaking swells and large moving tides is exceptionally dangerous.

Several callouts were made by the Coast Guard yesterday as people got into difficulty with the rough conditions of the Irish Sea.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council also moved to shut the East Pier to members of the public as waves overtopped the walkway.
