A Dublin council has voted to call on the Government to reinstate the eviction ban.
The ban, which lapses at the end of this month, prevented evictions from rental properties in Ireland. But notice could still be served on tenants with a flurry of evictions expected come April 1.
A motion was presented by Sinn Fein at tonight's meeting of Dublin City Council. The majority of members voted in favour of the motions calling for the Government to reinstate the ban.
Councillor Daithi Doolan, Sinn Fein Dublin housing spokesman said: "It is hugely significant that tonight Dublin City Council has voted overwhelmingly to support a Sinn Féin motion calling on the Government to reinstate the eviction ban. Government parties could only muster 8 votes to oppose this important motion.
"The Government decision to overturn the eviction ban is a cold, cruel, calculated decision. It punishes the most vulnerable for a housing crisis that has been caused by consecutive Governments failed policies. Tonight's vote sends a very loud, clear message to the Government. Ireland's largest local authority demands that Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien do the right thing and immediately reinstate the eviction ban.”
The move comes after the Government survived a motion of no confidence by Labour yesterday. It followed a heated Dail debate that ran for almost two-and-a-half hours.
