Dublin City Councillors pass four-day working week motion

A motion that would introduce a pilot for a four-day working week for Dublin City Council staff has been passed.

There was unanimous support from Councillors for the motion in last night's monthly council meeting.

The plan was brought forward by Councillor, Kevin Donoghue.

The motion was as follows: "This council calls on the Chief Executive to engage with the relevant trade unions for City Council staff with a view to piloting, and introducing, a four-day working week."

With there being no dissent, the motion was passed without the need for a vote.

All parties present including Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, Fianna Fail, Labour, Green Party, People Before Profit, Social Democrats and the Independent group all support the motion.

This comes on the back of the Government plan to monitor a pilot program organised by the group, Four Day Week Ireland.

The group claims a four-day working week can lead to a better work/life balance for employees but also has benefits for employers with higher productivity recorded in a number of instances.

Workers wages won't be affected in any way while working in a four day week.

The program is set to begin in January next year with trade unions saying a number of businesses across the country have already signed up for the initiative.
