Dublin City Council urges public to pick up after themselves as Camden Street covered by litter

Dublin City Council has pleaded with the public to clean up after themselves after a street was left strewn with rubbish.

Crowds queued up to get into some of the more popular pubs and restaurants on Camden Street in the capital over the weekend and that seemed to continue on Monday.

With Ireland set to essentially reopen on October 22 (including the return of Coppers just around the corner), footfall and traffic is only going to get busier.

Seán-Michael, a spokesman for the waste management team of the council, took to the official account of the team to show the damage on Monday night.

He said: "A glimpse of Camden Street in the early hours of this morning. Our outdoor spaces are a vital resource for everyone in the community to enjoy. Please respect yours and love this place, leave no trace. Thanks."

This is not the first time that litter has been an issue in the capital in 2021.

Back in May, there was widespread condemnation of scenes in Dublin, Cork and Galway, with South William Street in the Leinster county being a major focus.

Hundreds of people gathered on the street, leading to a massive clean-up effort the following morning by Dublin City Council (DCC) and an angry tweet from Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan.

In the aftermath of Monday night's incident, comedian Colm O'Regan put forward an interesting proposal to help clean up the streets.

He tweeted: "Forget photocopying or standing around awkwardly wondering what to do. If everyone did their transition year work experience picking up rubbish at five on a post-sesh morning, it would be life-changing."
