Dublin City Council to take charge of bin service following vote after seven years of privatisation

Councillors have decided to hand the city's bin service back into the hands of Dublin City Council following a vote on Monday.

The service was privatised in 2012 and since then, there has been an 11% increase in the price of collections.

As well as this, there has been a significant increase in illegal dumping across the capital.

It is being estimated that Dublin City Council will spend nearly €30m each year as they take charge of the waste collection.

Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí Doolan believes that despite the estimated cost, handing the service back to the council is the right move.

He said on Twitter: "Great victory. Council vote to take bin service back into council ownership. Major step forward for Dublin householders."

A new survey at the start of June found that although Ireland's tourist towns and cities are cleaner than ever, one Dublin area has been given the tag of 'litter blackspot'.

The results by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) showed that Ballymun recorded one of the worst results since the league was founded 17 years ago.

It's the first time in three years that an area has received the lowest grade of 'litter blackspot'.

The examiner of the survey noted that it was “especially disappointing that sites which had been top ranking in previous surveys were littered”.

The car park at Ballymun Shopping Centre was described as “a complete ‘eye-sore’ right in the centre of Ballymun” while Balbutcher Lane wasn’t just littered but subject to dumping, as was Shangan Road.

As well as this, Dublin's north inner city has been described as 'seriously littered'.
