Dublin City Council to leave gates of Herbert Park open overnight to public

Dublin City Council are planning to leave the gates of a popular park open overnight to the public starting from tonight.

Herbert Park will be able to be used by the public 24/7 despite the fact that no additional lighting will be installed in the Dartmouth Square area.

The local authority says it will continue to monitor the situation, advising people not to enter a public park after dark and adding that the advice was "common sense".

Speaking about the announcement, Green Party Councillor Hazel Chu has urged the DCC to install solar lighting along pathways in the park.

She said that opening parks in the city overnight is a good idea but that the local authority isn't utilising the facility properly without lighting.

Councillor Chu was told that installing lighting would give the public a "false sense of safety" to which she replied: "On the one hand you go 'oh, if it's dark then people won't go there', but chances are if it's dark that's where the anti-social behaviour happens."

Dartmouth Square and Herbert Park is set to open through the night from tonight, Sunday March 1.
