Dublin City Council to CPO half-built apartment scheme in north Dublin suburb

Dublin City Council has announced its intention to compulsorily purchase a half-built apartment scheme in Drumcondra.

Work stopped at Numbers 21 and 27-29 Richmond Road almost 10 years ago and the site was declared derelict in 2012.

It is owned by builder and anti-repossession campaigner Jerry Beades.

Locals residents have regularly complained that the site is an "eyesore", reports the Sunday Times.

It was initially intended to build almost 60 apartments on the land, which adjoins the childhood home of 1916 Rising proclamation signatory Thomas Clarke.

Mr Beades said the work stopped because Bank of Scotland "pulled the plug" on his funding.

He is currently taking a Supreme Court case against the bank.

He said: "I'm awaiting a judgement and until then my hands are tied. They all know about the case."

The builder has until July 29 to submit an objection to the CPO.

The site cannot be acquired by the council without the approval of An Bord Pleanala if Mr Beades lodges an objection.
