Dublin City Council stops controversial housing deal with British arms manufacturer

Dublin City Council have stopped a controversial housing deal with British arms manufacturer BAE.

Their housing department was initially set to lease property from British arms manufacturer BAE, sparking outrage from local councillors and members of the public.

The Council later confirmed at a budget meeting that they would be pausing on pressing ahead with the deal.

Sinn Féin Councillor, Daithí Doolan has welcomed their decision to completely pull out of the deal.

He told Dublin Live that the council were doing the right thing and that call for collective change always has power.

The Councillor felt that the deal should never have been considered in the first place.

In a statement, he said: "“The executive of Dublin City Council is doing the right thing in not proceeding with a deal with DAE. "Leasing housing units from this British arms manufacturer should not have been considered in the first place.

"The vigilance of citizens and city councillors now ensures that this deal will not proceed.

Cllr Doolan called for better alternative strategies to be developed to solve the country's housing crisis in the future.

He said: “Long-term leasing is just another very poor substitute for the development of social housing by the Council itself. In this case the contract was dropped on ethical grounds.

"But the whole practice needs to be ended and in the short-term all proposed contacts need to be reviewed on both economic and ethical grounds.”
