Dublin City Council shelves plans for 'elitist' white water rafting facility

Dublin City Council has shelved plans to build a white water rafting facility in the city centre.

The plan faced huge criticism from all ranks after it was initially proposed and ratified, with upwards of €2 million being spent on the idea already.

Council CEO Owen Keegan said they have been unable to secure funding from the State to get the project off the ground.

In a note sent to Councillors, Mr Keegan said that there had been significant hostility towards the project since it was announced.

Funding requests for the plans were refused by Government in March in a massive setback for the unprecedented George's Dock scheme.

Dublin City Council wanted €19 million for the project as part of the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund for the attraction - which doubled in price from its initial estimated cost.

Mr Keegan said a watersports facility would still be the best use of the Docklands space.

Fine Gael Councillor Danny Byrne was one of many to welcome the shelving, saying: "The news that Dublin City Council will not now proceed is welcome, however I will take the opportunity at tonights' monthly Dublin city council meeting to caution the Council management against rushing into an alternative proposal.

"Upwards of €2 million has been spent on this project and I think there now needs to be a period of reflection and lessons learned.

"The local swimming pool closed in 2019 ( on Sean McDermott Street ) due to a 'lack of funds', however the same story was not spun re The white water rafting.

"This was seen in the local community as elitist and I agree with that.

"I will tonight call on the Chief Executive of Dublin City Council to have a local consultation in terms of the best project for this site."
