Dublin City Council removes striking mural from city centre shopfront

Dublin City Council have reportedly removed a mural from the north inner city - despite objection from its creators.

Dynamo, a design and branding agency on the North Quay, painted a mural saying ‘You Got This’ on the outside of their premises during the pandemic. The artwork was meant to lift spirits during the difficult days of lockdown, according to the owners.

The shop shared an image on Instagram of the original mural beside the now repainted shop front in order to voice their disappointment. Dynamo’s intention was that the project would encourage other businesses in the area to follow suit and put up positive messages in their windows over the course of the pandemic.

“Spot the difference… it’s with a heavy heart we have to report that due to a court order from DCC, we have been forced to paint over our wonderful shopfront mural. Our ambition was to share a positive message during the pandemic while cheering up the north quay with some sensational street art,” the company’s post read.

The piece was commissioned by Dublin based artist Vanessa Power in vibrant lettering. The business did not give any further details on why the mural was removed.

People lamented the decision, with one Twitter user saying it was “the highlight of their morning commute” underneath the original post. Others argued that the council was overseeing a loss of creativity.

Dublin City Council has come under fire for the removal of several murals in the past after complaints were issued. The Council has authority to take down murals that violate planning laws - usually works that go up without prior approval.

Dublin Live have contacted Dublin City Council for comment.
