Dublin City Council have given the go-ahead to build a state-of-the-art €22m white water rafting centre in the Docklands.
The controversial proposal was passed by 37 votes to 19 at Monday evening's full council meeting.
The centre will be open to the public and will also serve as a training facility to aid the emergency services.
The rafting facility is hoped to serve as an 'anchor' to improve the range of leisure activity being made available along the River Liffey.
Dublin City Council previously said: "The White Water Rafting Centre (WWRC) will provide facilities for a wide range of people who wish to participate in water sports and leisure activities in a city centre location.
"It will serve members of the public who wish to kayak or canoe or go river rafting and will serve white water course customers, including tourist visitors, club canoeists, elite athletes and emergency services."
The proposal has divided opinion, with some councillors saying they couldn't vote for it.
Councillor Anthony Flynn said the plan was "crazy" given that Ireland is in the midst of a housing crisis.
Green Party rep Hazel Chu also expressed concerns about the cost of the project.
After the meeting, she tweeted: "Just back from council where the white water rafting got green light.
"Lots of answers provided & it being a training facility for Dublin Fire Brigade for water rescue is a big plus.
"But alas I voted against it due to cost & how we need better amenities suitable for all ages."
But other councillors were in favour of the proposal, with former Lord Mayor Christy Burke saying the centre would be an improvement on the current site.
Work on the project is expect to start next year and take 18 months to complete.
