Dublin City Council 'delighted' with first weekend of pedestrianisation trial

Dublin City Council are "delighted" with the first weekend of the pedestrianisation trial of areas near Grafton Street.

South William Street, South Anne Street, Dame Court, Duke Street and Drury Street were closed off to traffic over the weekend, with the idea going down a treat with many Dubliners on social media.

The trials started last Saturday, and are set to last for the next three weekends.

“The trial has gone very well to date,” said Brendan O’Brien, Head of Technical Services with Dublin City Council.

“The reaction over the weekend was largely positive and the area certainly seemed to benefit from these measures.

"At the moment we are considering responses received to date and requests to extend the pedestrian hours at a number of locations and reviewing if other changes are required."

Dublin City Council said members of the public can make their views known by taking part in an online survey on the Council website.

"These measures are being taken to support the economic recovery of the city by providing more space for pedestrians during weekends to encourage people to return for shopping, and to make use of the many cafés and restaurants in the area and so enjoy the city centre," the Council said.

Temporary street furniture permits have been issued to a number of cafes and restaurants on South Anne Street, Drury Street and Dame Court to assist them in the re-opening of their businesses and to provide for social distancing requirements.

Tables and chairs for these businesses' customers are be permitted in allocated on-street areas.
