Dublin City Council accused of being 'short-sighted' after voting to keep 15% reduction in local property tax

Dublin City Council has been accused of being "short-sighted" after voting to reduce local property tax by 15%.

The vote to keep the reduction was made last night by councillors, despite votes against plans to cut the tax by the Green Party, Labour and Social Democrats.

Chief executive Owen Keegan had urged councillors to not vote for the reduction in order to prevent a €12 million drop in revenue for the council.

Dublin Chamber have now accused councillors who voted in favour of the reduction of being "short-sighted" and expressed their disappointment at the decision.

Dublin Chamber CEO Mary Rose Burke said: “Councillors may think they’re doing their constituents a favour by reducing Local Property Tax by 15%, but what it means in reality is that Dubliners now face missing out on key services and improvements to their quality of life.

"The decision goes against the advice of City Manager Owen Keegan, who has stressed that the 15% reduction is putting pressure on the Council’s finances.

"Dublin is growing all the time, with more people working and living in the city and availing of services and amenities.

“We all want better public services in Dublin, but it shouldn’t be left to the businesses to pick up the bill. All the business community wants is to see fairness in how monies are collected.

"Sadly we’re not seeing that at the moment and any increase in commercial rates would increase this discrepancy."

In votes that took place earlier this month, a 15% discount has been applied in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown and South Dublin County Councils.

Fingal County Council also applied a 10% discount for property owners throughout the county.
