Dublin city centre footfall up almost a quarter over the weekend after hospitality restrictions lift

Footfall across Dublin city centre rose by 20% over weekend after the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions on hospitality.

And the figures are even more startling when compared to the same weekend last year, with footfall up 200% on January 2021.

Richard Guiney from Dublin Town said the increase was "really welcome news for businesses in the city".

He added: "Saturday’s figures are most likely driven by people visiting pubs, restaurants and clubs with the ending of restrictions.

"We will be closely monitoring footfall over the coming days and weeks to see if this translates into more people visiting Dublin midweek."

Dublin pubs and restaurants, in particular, felt the full force of lockdowns these past two years, and one of the pubs to benefit from restrictions ending was Grogans.

Speaking to Dublin Live, Grogans Bar manager Daniel Smith said he was delighted to see restrictions finally lift.

Daniel said: "I am delighted, it is great to have a bit normality and having people back at the bar counter.

"[The Covid Certs being dropped] caught off guard when it was leaked on Thursday.

" We didn't expect it. We expected a small easing of restrictions but not the light switch to be flicked and everything going."

He added: "Obviously a great surprise and delighted, just chuffed and made up."

"We had everyone gone at 8 o'clock on Friday night and we just had to get the place ready.

"We had to reorganise things and get them set for normal service rather than Covid service like we have been doing for the last six, seven, or eight months.
