Dublin cafe introduces edible coffee cups in unique sustainability bid

A city centre coffee shop is making a unique bid for sustainability by introducing edible coffee cups.

Beanhive Coffee on Dawson Street revealed to Dublin Live that their customers have been loving the cups since they were introduced to the cafe.

The cups are made by a business called Better Me who describe the experience of using them as "crispy drinking". Better Me also produce edible straws.

With a dream of introducing these cups to as many people in Ireland as possible, Better Me wanted to bring businesses and customers an alternative to disposable cups. Even if the cups aren't eaten, they decompose within two weeks.

Lara Zerner who looks after the marketing and social media for the cafe said: "When we first introduced the cups to Beanhive, we were one of the first cafes in the city to have them. There are a few now."

She added: "They taste like cereals. Our customers love them. They're GMO free and 100% eco friendly. Imagine an ice cream wafer but soaked with coffee.

"Most of our customers would be in their 20s or 30s. With the quirky art in the shop, we have really interesting customers who are very environmentally aware. A lot of them would be vegan or vegetarian."

Speaking about the reactions to the cups, Lara said that people are suspicious at first but trust other customers when they say they enjoy them.

She said: "We're running a promotion for them at the moment. We started with a price of €4.50 for a coffee in the edible cup but we're offering it for the original price of coffee at the moment to get people to try them."

Environmentally aware customers don't have to go to a cafe everyday to try the cups as they are available to purchase on the Better Me website.
