Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and Irish Rail information: Nine things you can do to stay as safe as possible when travelling

As the lockdown continues to ease across the country in the coming weeks, more and more people will return to the streets and onto public transport.

We're by no means out of the coronavirus crisis at this point in time, and how we act in the next few weeks could prove vital.

A return to using the DART, Luas, Dublin Bus and Irish Rail may come as a scary prospect to many after what we've endured over the last two months.

They are all incredible systems designed to carry lots of people around the county in a compact space and many will be fearful of how they can safely use them all.

The official advice is to avoid using these services where possible, but if you’ve no other choice, then follow this advice as best you can:

1. Wear a facemask

It’s an obvious point, but it’s an important one. Wearing a facemask consistently can protect you and others. Forget how it looks, it's important that you invest in one.

2. Avoid eating and drinking

We all love a coffee or a snack on while travelling. Even if it annoys other people. But now is not the time - avoid putting your hands near your mouth. And you should be wearing that facemask we mentioned anyway!

3. Avoid peak times

Naturally, some times of the day are busier than others. Try to avoid morning and evening peak. If possible, work with your employer to allow your working hours to reflect the quieter periods.

4. Bring hand sanitiser

It’s now as essential an item in your pocket or bag as a mobile phone.

Wash your hands before and after travel and carry hand sanitiser with you.

5. Avoid touching things

Sometimes it’s easier said than done, especially if you’re standing - but try to avoid touching railings and doors or windows.

6. Two metre rule

While we appreciate this is incredibly difficult in a confined space, if it’s possible when queuing or waiting on the Tube, do your best to enforce it.

7. Follow orders

Staff are there to help you. If they tell you to wait, wait. If they want you to queue up outside the station, it’s for your safety.

8. Avoid certain routes

Some lines and stations are going to significantly more busier than others.

9. Use contactless

Top. Up. Leap. Card. Or make sure to pre-order tickets online.
