Dublin Bus drivers vote to reject new work hours and pay deal

Over 90% of Dublin Bus workers have voted to reject a deal on pay rises and work practice changes.

1,700 drivers from the company voted on the deal on Thursday, which was offering pay hikes up to 15% in compensation for work practice changes.

Siptu and the National Bus and Rail Union had backed the deal.

The deal gave scope for drivers to have to work different hours and different routes.

Although their 39 hour work week wasn't going to be changed, workers may have been forced to work longer hours on certain days.

Speaking on RTE Radio One today, general secretary for the National Bus and Rail Union Dermot O'Leary said: "There is an anger among the workforce in Dublin Bus."

"There comes a time when the work-life balance might – and on this occasion it does – trump money. It’s as simple as that."

Bus drivers protested outside the Dail last month where they voiced their opposition to the deal.

They said the proposal would ""destroy the work/life balance" of drivers and "the people need to know that this is not about money."
