Dublin-born Qantas CEO Alan Joyce marries longtime boyfriend in lavish ceremony overlooking Sydney Harbour

The Dublin-born boss of Australian airline Qantas, Alan Joyce, tied the knot to long-time partner Shane Lloyd at a “sophisticated but relaxed” ceremony in Sydney at the weekend.

The Tallaght man got hitched to his New Zealand-born partner on the rooftop of the plush Museum of Contemporary Art overlooking the city’s famous harbour.

Around 120 friends and family - including many who jetted over from Dublin - attended the wedding of the 53-year-old former DIT student, who has been with his man for more than 20 years.

Joyce’s brothers Maurice and Anthony - who was best man - were amongst those who travelled from Ireland to be at the ceremony, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"[Alan] was my best man 20 years ago and he embarrassed the hell out of me," Anthony said, before his wife Davida added: "It's payback today.”

Joyce - who last month joked that his lavish nuptials would be "the most expensive wedding of a Tallaght man" - is Australia’s highest paid CEO and last year raked in AU$24m (€15m).

The Aussie flag carrier's chief famously donated $1million (€620K) towards the campaign for marriage equality in Australia, which resulted in same-sex marriages being made legal Down Under in late 2017.

“We donated personally a million dollars to the (Yes to marriage equality) campaign because we were massively outmatched by the church, who supported a ‘no’ campaign,” Joyce told a Dublin Chamber event at the Convention Centre last month.

"So I can probably almost with complete certainty say that my marriage in three weeks’ time is the most expensive wedding of a Tallaght man."

Also at the glitzy wedding bash were some of Australia’s most influential business leaders and politicians, including former Governor General of Australia Sir Peter Cosgrove, who signed Australia’s marriage equality bill into law almost two years ago.

“On December 8, 2017, I signed one of the biggest pieces of legislation of modern times,”  Cosgrove said according to Sydney based newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

"I normally signed every piece of legislation in my office, even important bills, but I decided to make a big deal of that one.

"I had the prime minister and lawyer present me with the bill to sign. I thought Alan and Shane would appreciate a memento of something so important to gay Australians."
