Dublin blue flag beach temporarily off-limits to swimmers due to water pollution

Dublin’s Seapoint is currently out of bounds for swimmers due to the pollution in the water.

According to the warning, water quality deteriorated due to suspected impacts from animals and birds.

Swimmers should also be aware that when the swimming restrictions lift, there may be sudden large waves caused by the car ferries and that there is no diving allowed from the platforms.

With rain forecast over the next few days, an extension to the swimming ban may be put in place as this area is subject to short-term pollution after heavy rainfall.

There are restrictions in place at two other Dublin locations at the moment, including a permanent ban at Merrion Strand.

It was classified as having "Poor" water quality following the 2016-2019 assessment period.

2019 will be the fifth consecutive year Merrion Strand has had a Poor Water Quality rating and therefore was declassified in accordance with the Bathing Water Regulations, SI 79 of 2008.

Swimmers are also reminded that front Strand Beach in Balbriggan is also permanently off-limits.

The reason for this restriction is because Front Strand beach, Balbriggan was classified as having poor water quality following the 2020 bathing season.

Water Safety Ireland insists that although open water swimming can be an enjoyable experience people need to have the right safety knowledge and preparation.

It is important to remember, there are considerably more dangers with open water swimming.

“If you see someone in difficulty, please dial 112 and ask for the coast guard.”
