Dublin beach Merrion Strand could be hit with permanent swimming ban

Swimming at one of the capital's most popular beaches could be banned from this year on according to Dublin City Council.

People may no longer be able to swim at Merrion Strand due to its ongoing poor water quality results.

The south Dublin beach did not meet the EU's minimum bathing water standards for four years in a row up to 2018.

If the beach fails to meet the standards for a fifth year in a row, it will be hit with a "permanent bathing prohibition", making it the first Irish beach ever to be issued with this.

The council added that Merrion Strand is at a "high risk" of failing to meet standards again, according to The Irish Times.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will not release the results of its 2019 bathing water quality tests until April or May.
