Dublin armed robberies leave staff terrified as follow up raid sees garda injured and man arrested

Staff in a Dublin shop and post office have been left terrified following armed robberies in two Dublin areas today.

A garda was injured in a follow up raid during an attack by a dog on several garda members in an incident which saw shots fired from an official firearm.

Earlier in the day, a man armed with a hand gun entered a shop in Rialto and threatened staff, leaving the premises with a sum of cash.

He then entered a supermarket in the Kilmainham area and threatened staff once again, this time leaving with cigarettes.

As part of the garda investigation into the incident, a raid took place at a property in Inchicore where the man was arrested.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí have arrested a man in his 20s as part of ongoing investigations into armed robbery incidents in Rialto and Kilmainham on Monday, 11th January 2021.

"Shortly after 12 noon a lone male armed with a hand gun entered a shop in Rialto and threatened staff before leaving the scene with a sum of cash. Moments later a man entered a supermarket & post office in the Kilmainham area and threatened staff before leaving the scene with a quantity of cigarettes. No one was physically harmed in either incident.

"In the course of a follow up operation local Detectives and members of the Armed Support Unit (ASU) searched a house in the Inchicore area this evening and arrested a man in his 20s. He is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939 at Kevin Street Garda Station. (He can be held for up to three days.) A number of items believed to be connected with the robberies were seized in evidence.

"During the operation an official firearm was discharged when Gardaí were attacked by a dog. One Garda member was injured in the attack and required medical treatment. The dog has been removed for veterinary treatment.

"The investigation is ongoing."
