Dublin area coined 'Covid hotspot' as five infected capital 'redzones' most dangerous in Ireland

One north Dublin area is the second most infected place in Ireland according to new and worrying HSE data.

Not only does Ballymun-Finglas top the figures in Dublin but it comes in second place nationwide behind Galway City, recording 798 cases per 100,000 population.

The figures were analysed over a 14-day period up to February 22 which uncovered that the northside area was well over three times higher than the national average of 240 cases per 100,000.

It's also way out in front of the rest of the pack in the capital with Tallaght South in second at a much lower but still concerning 555.5.

The rest of the top five Dublin areas are all muddled closely together and also make up the top 10 most infected areas in the country.

These include: Blanchardstown-Mulhuddart with 529.6, Ballyfermot-Drimnagh at 488.4 and the North Inner City with 487.3.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said there is concerning information about Covid-19 case numbers around the country but had one positive note in an update yesterday.

He said the Government “hopes” to tell everyone by the end of the month when they will get a vaccine.

Speaking to party colleagues in Fine Gael, Varadkar added there will be “reliable” information to give people about when each cohort on the vaccination list will get a jab at the end of March.

Sources said he is optimistic about the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine getting approval for use by the Europe’s health watchdog next week.

If that is the case, he told TDs and Senators that the doses will start arriving in Ireland in April.

He said there is “still quite some time to go unfortunately” and that the virus is still putting people in hospital despite figures falling.
