Dublin and Tyrone slapped with €5,000 fines for Omagh brawl in Allianz League clash

Dublin and Tyrone have both been hit with €5,000 fines following the recent Healy Park brawl, with no players singled out for suspension.

The measure comes as no surprise as official footage of the melee, which broke out in the tunnel area at half-time in Tyrone’s three-point victory on February 29, was inconclusive in terms of identifying individuals involved while amateur footage from spectators’ camera phones is inadmissible.

Tyrone’s Padraig Hampsey was issued with a black card before the resumption of the second half by referee Cormac Reilly and served 10 minutes on the sideline as a result but, that apart, no player will miss any further game time arising from the flashpoint after the Central Competitions Control Committee launched an investigation.

Both sides return to League action this weekend as Tyrone travel to Ballybofey to face Donegal on Saturday evening, while Dublin take on already relegated Meath at Croke Park on Sunday afternoon.

The two county boards are entitled to challenge the fines at the Central Hearings Committee but it is expected that both will accept the sanction and move on, independent.ie  has reported.

Last month’s incident wasn’t the first time that Tyrone and Dublin came to blows at Healy Park, with the row drawing references to the infamous ‘Battle of Omagh’ in 2006, a game that was close to being abandoned after two major melees broke out during a League game.

Four players were sent off and nine were subsequently issued with suspensions though only one of them stuck - that of Tyrone’s Collie Holmes due to the fact that he had been the only player issued with a straight red card on the day - as both counties exploited loopholes in the GAA rulebook, which was tightened up considerably in the aftermath.
