Dublin and Limerick county boards suspend April club fixtures

The Dublin county board has joined Limerick in suspending club fixtures for the month of April.

On Friday, the Galway hurling board postponed the opening round of senior and intermediate championship fixtures scheduled for the first weekend of April and several other counties are likely to follow suit, though the GAA at national level will likely issue a directive on that in due course.

Both Limerick and Dublin hinted at overhauling their schedule and restructuring their competitions with no end to the coronavirus crisis in sight.

In an email to club secretaries, Dublin CEO John Costello said that the county board had “postponed all grades of club championship games fixed for April due to the uncertainty surrounding the resumption of activity.”

He continued: "If the current pandemic continues beyond April it is proposed to engage with the Leinster Council and the National Competitions Control Committee with a view to restructuring our games programme for 2020.

"This may include the redesign of the current formats. If so, we will engage with the clubs prior to any decision being made."

Costello announced a suspension of all GAA activity in Dublin on Thursday, before the GAA had announced a similar meausre on a national basis, and in concluding his email to club secretaries, he said: “Please ensure that your club teams are adhering to the directive that no training or games can take place at any level during this pandemic.”

It comes on the back of Dublin LGFA tweeting on Sunday that it had received “a number of messages from worried members informing us that some club mentors are organising or trying to set up team training sessions” and reminding clubs of their responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the Tipperary county board has issued a statement calling out a message circulating on social media that falsely claims to be senior hurling manager Liam Sheedy.

“Unfortunately, at this time of crisis, some unknown individual or individuals has issued a false message doing the rounds on social media purporting to be from the Tipperary SH manager,” read the statement.

“This is wholly inaccurate fake news and is causing unnecessary concern to all parties. I appeal if you have received it, to delete immediately and not to forward.

“The fight against Covid-19 must continue. Messages like this and others on social media are certainly not helping that cause.

“Be safe everyone and please do not spread any fake news, whatever its content. Together and united we will prevail.”
