Dublin Airport to see €13m overhaul of luggage security system as part of multi million euro project

Dublin Airport will see major security upgrades made for passenger luggage at Terminal One as a part of a multi million euro project.

The upgrade will involve a massive overhaul of the airport’s baggage-handling system to adhere to the new explosive detection requirements under EU rules.

The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has said that the new system won’t be finished until 2023.

The work, which is due to start this year, will involve demolishing a baggage-handling area between Terminal One and Two which will be replaced with a five-storey building.

It will also include an extended baggage hall with new equipment and a control room amongst other things, the Irish Independent reports.

The overall cost of the major renovation will be around €13m, according to the DAA.

New laws regulations introduced by the EU in 2011 state that existing systems must be removed and new ones must be installed by a certain date.

Currently many airports rely on X-ray to detect possible explosives in luggage but the new standards will require sophisticated technology which can perform computer axial tomography (CAT) analysis of baggage.
