Dublin Airport sees 40,000 cigarettes seized following search by Revenue officers

Thousands of cigarettes were seized by Revenue officers following a search of baggage at Dublin Airport.

The checked baggage of a number of passengers who had disembarked from a flight from Sofia, Bulgaria today.

Officials discovered 40,000 cigarettes during the search which have since been confiscated.

In a separate incident yesterday, around 29,600 cigarettes were seized as part of routine profiling at Rosslare Europort.

They were discovered when Revenue officers stopped and searched a Czech registered van that had disembarked a ferry from Cherbourg, France.

Revenue officers used a mobile x-ray scanner to discover the illegal smokes concealed in a mattress.

A Czech national in his 40’s was questioned in connection with the find.

The cigarettes seized as a result of both operations were of various brands and have a combined retail value of €49,000, representing a loss to the Exchequer of over €38,500.

SA Revenue spokeswoman said investigations into both seizures are ongoing.

She added: "These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling they can contact Revenue in confidence on the confidential free phone number 1800 295 295."
