Dublin Airport rescue flight as Ryanair hope to operate last-minute plane for 'stranded Irish'

Ryanair is hoping to launch a last-minute "rescue flight" for hundreds of "stranded Irish" stuck in the UK amid Britain's travel bans which have been in place since midnight on Monday.

The popular airline is currently liaising with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs to operate a service for "eligible Irish citizens" looking to get home ahead of the Christmas period.

If successful, the plane will leave London-Stansted at 5pm today, December 22, with FR520 arriving in Dublin just after 6pm.

The flight is being priced at €95 one way with tickets being sold on a first come first serve basis.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: "We are working with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs to operate a rescue flight for eligible Irish citizens who are stranded in the UK.

"All such Irish citizens who need a rescue flight home to Ireland or are transiting through the UK prior to Dec 25 should please call the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs on 01 6131700 or DM us directly for more details.

They added: "All seats on this rescue flight to Ireland are priced at €95 one way."

It comes after there was some travel nightmares in London on Sunday night after around 300 people were left stranded in an apparent overbooking on a Dublin Airport bound flight.

An extra flight from Heathrow was arranged in the late hours of Sunday night to help hundreds get home before the introduction of the travel ban.

Photos and videos showed large queues in Terminal 5 at the airport after passengers were unable to board a scheduled Aer Lingus flight to Dublin just before 9pm.

It is understood that as many as 300 people were told that the flight had been oversold with alternative arrangements being advised but were later placed on a subsequent flight.
