A doctor has told of a Dublin Airport passenger's nightmare after treating the young patient who was complaining of covid symptoms.
The top doc said that the woman's travel situation was the exact reason why a "five-day quarantine" system would not be effective in Ireland.
Micheal Martin said over the weekend that mandatory quarantine of up to five days may be considered for people travelling into Ireland without a PCR test from the last 72 hours.
But medical experts, including Dr Patrick Kelly who issued the tweet, have said that five-day quarantines are rarely sufficient with 14 days the recommended stretch.
Doctor Kelly said the 27-year-old's symptoms did not appear until her seventh day after she flew from Asia to the capital via the Netherlands.
He said on Twitter: "Today I consulted a 27yr old patient with symptoms of Covid who flew from Asia to Dublin via Amsterdam during the last 7 days.
"Her symptoms are appearing on day 7 of arrival. That’s why 5 day quarantine won’t work."
It is expected that mandatory quarantining for people travelling into Ireland without proof of being Covid-free is being considered in Government's meeting today.
Cabinet Ministers are understood to be introducing new rules on quarantine especially for those travelling in from Northern Ireland.
Proposals are expected to emerge towards the end of Monday before Cabinet release full details this week.
