Dublin Airport mystery continues as weird satellite photos cause confusion from passengers

Dublin Airport has weighed in on a rather mysterious set of circumstances involving their planes, satellite images and their passengers.

The building regularly sees over 30 million people pass through on any given year.

It's got two terminals, allowing for a large amount of planes to take off, land or refuel at any one time.

But, according to Google Maps, this isn't the case - as when you look at the airport, it is completely bare.

It all started with one tweet on Wednesday evening to the airport, which read: "What's the story with satellite imagery of airports? They've scrubbed every last plane from Dublin. . Seems similar for Heathrow and JFK too. Have planes or airports started invoking some EU GDPR Right to be Forgotten law?"

This brought a response from the official account for Dublin Airport, which said "it is quite odd to see ourselves devoid of aircraft. Not a single one. And as you say, it’s the same if you look at @googlemaps for @HeathrowAirport or @JFKairport . However, it shows aircraft @CorkAirport and both airports in Belfast and at @ParisAeroport."

Everyone seemed quite confused about the whole situation, with some guessing that it could be a GDPR issue, with others wondering whether the snaps were taken during the pandemic.

Dublin Airport followed up with its own suggestion, saying: "We’re not sure what the story is, but if we were able to guess - which of course as an airport we can’t - we’d speculate that it might be related to a change in the way @googlemaps is displaying airports & some satellite images are older than others. That could be rubbish though."

You can have a look yourself if you don't believe the rather strange mystery removal.
