Dublin Airport explain why low-flying plane is going over and back for hours above three counties

A plane has been flying back and forth over three Irish counties today causing confusion amongst locals.

Leitrim, Fermanagh and Cavan people have been seeing the small aircraft zip across their clear skies all morning.

The Vulcanair P68C came from East Midlands Airport earlier today and has been flying about 7,500 feet above the north-west of the country.

Dublin Airport assured anyone confused that the plane was not doing any harm and is simply mapping.

A spokesperson for the airport said: "Irish skies remain almost devoid of aircraft due to the ongoing impact of Covid-19 on aviation. Fine day for a mapping flight over Leitrim, Cavan & Fermanagh though."

This type of plane is used for mapping and observation studies worldwide due to its capacity for low flying.

The same plane was over Dublin in recent weeks doing the same mapping - and also giving the airport a chance to make some political jokes.

When asked why it was over Dublin earlier this week the airport made a dig at UK politician Dominic Cummings.

They tweeted: "Apparently, the pilot is testing his eyesight just to make sure he’ll be ok for a transatlantic flight in a day or two. Sorry, that’s obviously not the case. It’s collecting information for a mapping software company."
