Dublin Airport explain strange reason one small plane was flying over Ireland for hours on end

Many noticed a small plane over Dublin on Wednesday that appeared to be doing loops of the capital.

The privately owned aircraft left Chester on Wednesday morning and was going over and back above the capital for much of the day.

Many aviation geeks couldn't get their head around what the aircraft was doing but Dublin Airport had the answers.

The flight was to record data for mapping, according to the airport authority - and not anything out of this world.

Dublin Airport tweeted: "Very few flights ATM, but this little fella in red has been very busy today taking new images for mapping software apparently.

"Either that or he’s scouting for a planned invasion. We’ll go with the former."

Dublin Airport is indeed incredibly quiet at the moment with international travel coming close to a standstill.

There are currently 95% less flights than normal in and out of Dublin.

And Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said it will take months not weeks for Covid-19 restrictions to be lifted and travel around the European Union to return to normal.

Ireland, which is part of a Common Travel Area with the United Kingdom but not a member of the European Union's Schengen free travel area, is considering strengthening public health requirements for visitors from abroad, Varadkar said.

"While it is our policy to resume normal travel for business, leisure, study and visits to friends and relatives (around the EU) as soon as it is safe to do so... it will be months, not weeks before this is possible," he said.
