Dublin Airport discovery as almost 750,000 cigarettes seized by Revenue officials

Almost 750,000 cigarettes were seized by Revenue officials at Dublin Airport yesterday.

The huge haul follows on from the discovery of 900,000 cigarettes at a storage facility in Dublin 11 in a related operation last Friday.

The smuggled cigarettes were branded ‘Benson and Hedges’ and had arrived into the country from China, via Poland.

Both shipments were addressed to the same consignee.

Both stashes have a combined retail value of over €1.1 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €910,000.

A UK National was questioned and investigations are ongoing.

A Revenue spokeswoman said: "These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295."
