Dublin Airport shooting scare after man threatens to 'shoot up' terminal

Armed gardai rushed to Dublin Airport after a man threatened to “shoot up” the place, it has emerged.

The man, who is in his 40s, is understood to have warned that he was armed with a firearm in the middle of Terminal One shortly before 1pm yesterday afternoon.

Sources say the man was frustrated after allegedly missing a flight and claimed to airport staff that he was armed and would start shooting.

The incident caused airport staff to immediately contact gardai — with the Garda Armed Support Unit and the Emergency Response Unit rushing to the scene.

It is understood, however, that an unarmed member of An Garda Siochana managed to apprehend the man first — after the officer was alerted by airport police.

The man was searched, and it emerged that he was in fact unarmed.

It is understood that gardai had concerns about the man’s mental health in the incident, which was described as being of serious concern.

Gardai escorted the man to nearby Ballymun Garda Station, where he was questioned.

He was then charged and is due to appear before the Criminal Court of Justice.

“Gardai arrested a man aged in his 40s following an incident at Dublin Airport this afternoon, June 13, 2021, at approximately 12.55pm," they said.

“The man was taken to Ballymun Garda Station where he is currently detained.

“He will now appear before a sitting of the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin.

“No injuries were reported.”

A spokesperson for Dublin Airport declined to comment on the incident and referred this paper to An Garda Siochana.
