Dublin Airport air traffic control tower to light up in support of Pieta House

The air traffic control tower at Dublin Airport is to light up tonight and into the early hours of Saturday in support of Pieta House.

It's part of the charity's Darkness into Light 'Sunrise' campaign which has had to change this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The annual walk was due to take place in the early hours of Saturday, May 9, but was postponed due to the crisis.

This special appeal encourages people to donate what they can and to get up at 5:30am to watch the sunrise instead and to show community and solidarity with those impacted by suicide.

At 87.7m high, the IAA’s new Air Traffic Control tower is the country’s tallest occupied building.  The beacon of light, which was installed by the IAA and ESB can be seen throughout Dublin and in neighbouring counties.

IAA Chief Executive Peter Kearney said: "The IAA is proud to show its support for the Darkness into Light campaign, in aid of the important life-saving work of Pieta House.

"We hope through this initiative to promote mental health awareness, prevent suicide, reduce the stigma associated with suicide and to let those affected know that they are not alone.

"The beacon shining through the night and into the dawn is a strong symbol of hope, that even at the darkest times, there is always light.

"The Authority and our staff are supporting this iconic campaign and we hope that by shining a light, we can remember all those who have died or have lost loved ones at this time."
