Dublin actress Dervla Kirwan says she has more energy now than she did in her 20s

Actress Dervla Kirwan says she has more energy now than she had in her 20s – as she prepares to celebrate her 50th birthday in October.

The Smother star admitted she was surprised by the success of the RTE drama which has just wrapped for a second series to air next spring.

Lauding writers for providing more roles for older women, she said: “I think we’re entering a new phase, it’s a phase that is ripe for the picking.Just because a woman is 50 we are not over the hill, we need to be more present.”

Dervla, who first shot to fame on Ballykissangel, added: “We are the heads of companies, we should be beacons of what women are and can achieve out there.

“The idea that once the menopause hits it’s game over... I’m in the menopause, and I have more energy now. I’m enjoying my life more than I did in my 20s.

“We want challenging female characters; nobody is interested in perfection.

“It is changing. I think there’s huge opportunity for women to go into script writing and to shape the future and narrate for themselves.”
