Dublin accounts for almost half of contacts made to the Crime Victims Helpline last year

Almost half of the contacts made to the national Crime Victims Helpline last year were from the capital.

Dublin accounted for 43% of the communications made.

Meath was the next highest area, making up 7%, followed by Cork with 6%.

The helpline's annual report was released today and says they had an "over representation" of contacts from the Dublin

The report says: "As in years past, in 2020 the percentage of contacts with CVH were roughly proportionate to the population distribution of Ireland.

"Exceptions to this are Dublin, which is over represented and Cork which is underrepresented."

Nationally, the helpline had a 15% increase in contacts last year compared to 2019.

They recorded over 5,170 contacts over the free helpline 116 006, text, email, and post.

Harassment and assault were the most common reasons people contacted the helpline, accounting for 676 and 655 cases respectively.

Other reasons for reaching out included rape/sexual assault, fraud, theft, blackmail, homicide and stalking.

In 85% of cases, the contact came directly from the victim of the crime.

Michele Puckhaber, Executive Director of the helpline, said: “The increase in contacts was particularly significant when considering the decrease in reported crime in 2020.

"Not only were we contacted by more people, calls on the helpline got longer and more intense.

"Many of our callers were suffering in isolation, separated from family and friends and without the usual activities of daily life for distraction."
