Dublin accounts for almost a quarter of all rodent infestation call-outs

Dublin accounted for almost a quarter of all call-outs to treat rodent infestations this summer, it has been revealed.

The number of call-outs soared by 102% in May, June and July of this year when compared to the same period last year, according to figures released by pest control provider Rentokil.

And experts have warned the problem will only get worse as we enter the winter months.

The capital was the worst area for pest infestations accounting for 24% of the total call-outs.

Cork was next on the list, making up 11% of all call-outs, followed by Galway on 7%.

Pest control experts have advised homeowners to take some simple precautions to avoid attracting rodents.

Rentokil's top tips include keeping food in either metal or glass containers with tight fitting lids, putting outdoor rubbish bags in metal bins, and cleaning up pet food.

And rodent expert Dr Colm Moore has warned the problem will only get worse as the summer comes to an end.

He said: "Rodents are a real threat to the hygiene of a premises, and we expect to see a further increase in call-outs later in the year when rats and mice begin their migration indoors to escape colder temperatures."
