Dublin 3-19 Galway 0-24: Tribesmen exit early as Dubs go through to Quarter-Finals

Captain Chris Crummey fired the crucial goal as Dublin pulled off a remarkable Leinster SHC win - ending Galway’s summer.

Holders and 2017 All-Ireland winners Galway were two points clear in an epic encounter with 66 minutes played at Parnell Park.

But they were outscored 1-5 to 0-2 from there and the defeat ultimately edged them into fourth place in the Leinster table.

That means their Championship is over but Dublin’s third placed finish means they’re through to an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final tie.

Mattie Kenny’s men dug so deep to progress because it looked as if Galway had grabbed vital momentum after surging two clear.

The sides had been level 16 times up to then and a Dublin point from the excellent Conal Keaney made it 17.

Then Crummey burst through the Galway defence and blasted in the goal that ultimately won it for Dublin.

It put them three clear and after missing out on the All- Ireland series under Pat Gilroy last year they could finally look forward to an extended summer.

Galway threw the kitchen sink at them late on but not even the return of Joe Canning after injury could inspire them.

And when then news came through that Wexford and Kilkenny drew, pushing Galway into fourth position in the table, there were audible groans among the maroon support.

But the Dublin supporters couldn’t hide their delight and stormed the pitch to celebrate a famous win.

The hits were huge and the intensity was off the charts as two old rivals squared off.

The sides were level eight times in the opening period with Galway shooting seven wides and ruing their wasteful play.

Free-taker Cathal Mannion drilled half a dozen first-half points, all but one of those coming from frees, as they hit the interval with a narrow 0-12 to 1-8 lead.

Galway closed out the half strong because they fell 1-8 to 0-8 behind in the 29th minute when Dublin netted through Eamon Dillon.

Sean Moran struck Dublin’s second goal from a penalty just after the restart.

Crummey showed his lion heart again to win the penalty off Daithi Burke who was booked for a cynical charge.

But Galway were boosted by Canning’s introduction after long-term injury and he scored a point in his first play, adding another.

Galway eventually pulled two points clear and looked to have momentum on their side as they chase a return to the Leinster final.

But Dublin summoned all their courage and spirit to see them off in the closing minutes with that inspirational late flourish.

Veteran Keaney was terrific when they needed him most and scored three points in the second-half.
