Dublin 14th most congested city in the world, new report finds

Dublin is the 14th most congested city in the world and ranks sixth in Europe, a new report has revealed.

Drivers in the capital are spending an average of 45% more time in traffic than they should.

Top three worst routes in Dublin are Dorset Street Lower/Upper, Drumcondra Road Lower/Upper and Church Street Upper.

Traffic gridlocks in the capital cost a whopping €350 million a year but experts have voiced concerns that the figure could rise to €2 billion by 2033 if the issue isn’t tackled in time.

Dublin’s traffic congestion problems worsened by 1% last year, the TomTom Traffic Index 2018 found.

Heik Schilling, head of navigation at TomTom, told the Irish Independent: “The city has experienced a major growth in population and employment, much of it in or near the city centre.

“In spite of investment in new road and rail infrastructure, busways and bikeways, congestion remains stubbornly high."

In Ireland, Cork has been ranked as the second most congested city followed by Limerick.
