Dubai converted exhibition halls at its World Trade Center into a field hospital to handle a potential increase in COVID-19 cases in the United Arab Emirates, local media said.

The hospital, which has a capacity of 3,000 beds, including 800 for intensive care patients, is due to open its doors on Thursday.

Several Gulf states have said there has been a growing number of infections among low income foreign workers who live in overcrowded housing.

The UAE recorded 412 new infections and reported three deaths from the virus among Asian expatriates, authorities said on Tuesday.

Millions of migrant workers, many from Asia, account for the bulk of the Gulf’s labor force.

Saudi Arabia’s education ministry said on Wednesday that more than 3,400 shuttered schools in the Kingdom would be used to rehouse migrant workers from cramped accommodation.

Neighboring Bahrain is doing the same.
