Dua Lipa will perform at Eurovision 2022 - and Abba will write song

Abba have offered to save the UK from more Eurovision humiliation by writing us a song for next year.

And the winners of the 1974 competition say English star Dua Lipa is their favourite to perform the work.

The Swedish quartet want to help prevent any more last-place embarrassment such as that suffered by this year’s UK hopeful James Newman.

James was awarded the dreaded “nul points” after performing Embers in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in May.

ABBA – Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad – won with their song Waterloo and became the most successful Eurovision act of all time.

Speaking on Radio 4 yesterday, Björn and Benny said of their idea of writing for Britain: “What is the risk? You can’t be worse than last. But it needs to be a really good act... like Dua Lipa.”

The BBC has already confirmed that Dua Lipa’s management company TaP music, which also represents Ellie Goulding and Lana Del Rey, will select the UK’s next Eurovision entry.

The company has called on the UK music industry to put forward “experienced live performers” for consideration to perform at the 66th ESC, scheduled to be held in Turin, Italy, in May.

The UK has not had a top-10 Eurovision finisher since 2009, when Jade Ewen came fifth with It’s My Time.

Since 2014 the UK has only done better than 24th place once – Lucie Jones came 15th with Never Give Up On You in 2017.

Earlier this year the UK took bottom place after James Newman failed to score a single point with his song, Embers. His performance was the latest in a long line of disasters which have kept the UK out of the top 10 for more than a decade.

Blue finished in 11th place in 2011 with I Can while Jade Ewan took 5th place in 2009 with It’s My Time.

Since 2014 the UK has only done better than 24th place once.
