DT Taylor Stallworth re-signs with Saints practice squad

Second-year nose tackle Taylor Stallworth re-signed with the New Orleans Saints practice squad after going unclaimed on waivers, as announced by his agent Brett Tessler. Tessler was waived from the 53-man roster earlier this week amidst a flurry of roster moves, including the promotion of rookie wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey, which created an opening on the practice squad.

Stallworth first signed with the Saints a year ago as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina; he made the team and appeared frequently in games within the defensive line rotation. But an influx of more young talent (like Shy Tuttle, another undrafted rookie, out of Tennessee) and the return of players who were suspended or on reserve lists (starting defensive tackle David Onyemata, former Wyoming defensive end Carl Granderson) pushed him off the roster. Still, it’s encouraging to see him land on the Saints practice squad.

Tessler added that while Stallworth should be on a team’s 53-man roster soon — and received offers to sign with other teams’ practice squads — his client wanted to remain in New Orleans, where he started his career. It’s an admirable ambition, and gives the Saints the benefit of having someone on hand with NFL experience in their system who they can call up in a pinch.
