DT Joey Ivie returns to Chiefs on practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs have added a familiar face in order to fill out their 10-man practice squad.

There was one spot remaining on the Chiefs’ practice squad after the team elevated Byron Pringle to the active roster ahead of the Raiders game. The Chiefs recently released DT Joey Ivie to make room for Greg Senat. Ivie spent time on the practice squad for the Chiefs last season and signed a reserve/future contract following the conclusion of the season. He made the 53-man roster in 2019 initially but he still has practice squad eligibility.

The team has decided to bring Ivie back on the practice squad according to Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest. The official transaction is expected to come through later today.

Ivie has played in two games so far this season recording 22 snaps and just one tackle during that time. He had a good preseason for the Chiefs and is well-liked in the locker room. It makes sense to bring him back to the practice squad with that open spot available.

The Chiefs drafted DT Khalen Saunders in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft and he’s moved up on the depth chart in the absence of Ivie. It’s likely that the front office wants to see him getting the snaps that Ivie was taking, which may have prompted the Chiefs to release Ivie over another player.

Here is a look at the full practice squad for the Chiefs:

  • QB Kyle Shurmur
  • WR Jody Fortson
  • WR Cody Thompson
  • TE Nick Keizer
  • RB Marcus Marshall
  • CB Torry McTyer
  • CB Alex Brown
  • LB Emmanuel Smith
  • DE Cameron Malveaux
  • DT Joey Ivie

Ivie rounds things out on the practice squad to make it an equal split of five defensive and five offensive players.
