Drunken woman branded 'animal' by policeman after she bit him and sang about rape

A policeman has told of his fury after his was bitten by a drunk mum who also sang a song about 'raping' the families of officers.

Claire Fowles left PC Wells fearing he might catch Covid after she sank her teeth into his arm at her home in South Shields.

The incident happened after worried neighbours called police when they mistakenly thought Fowles was being assaulted by her partner, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

When two officers, PC Wells and PC Parker, arrived they were greeted by abuse from drunken Fowles.

The 40-year-old then attacked PC Parker and bit PC Wells.

In a statement read to the court PC Wells described Fowles as behaving "like an animal" and told of his fears he could have caught Covid from her.

Chronicle Live reports the officer said: "I'm aware that being a police officer comes with its risks.

"However, I did not join this profession to be a zoo keeper. Fowles has put me at direct risk."

Kate Barnes, prosecuting, told how police were called at about 11.40pm on February 22. Fowles opened the door and the officers noticed she was holding her side as if she was in pain.

The two PCs entered the home where they found Fowles' partner and handcuffed him.

"The defendant became increasingly aggressive," Ms Barnes explained.

"She had to be restrained by PC Parker. PC Parker describes how the defendant began to push and hit her."

PC Wells, who was still holding on to the man's handcuffs, came back into the hallway, the court heard.

"It was quite a melee at this point," said Ms Barnes. "As the officer has hold of the defendant, the defendant sank her teeth into his upper right arm, causing him to shout out in pain.

"He said it felt as if she was trying to hold on to his arm with her teeth.

The court was told how Fowles then shouted: "I'm going to rape your family, I'm going to rape your children."

She then began singing: "I'm going to rape your family."

Further officers had to be called to help arrest Fowles, who when interviewed said she was so intoxicated she could not remember the incident.

Fowles, of Winskill Road, South Shields, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Recorder Kama Melly QC branded Fowles' behaviour as "foul" as she sentenced her to 10 months in prison suspended for two years.

She said: "Two police officers came to your home, their job was to protect you and that's why they were there. This was, as you well know utterly foul behaviour. It could be described in that way at any time,
but during a pandemic your behaviour towards them is particularly repulsive."

Shada Mellor, mitigating, said Fowles suffered from bi-polar disorder, was taking methadone, and has had an alcohol problem in the past.

She said: "She apologises profusely for her behaviour."

Fowles sentence also includes rehabilitation and alcohol treatment programmes.
