Drunken teacher filmed by pupil wearing just his pants in street is struck off

A teacher filmed by a pupil wearing just his boxers and trainers has been struck off.

The history teacher was caught on film as he stood in the middle of a road at 8am.

Footage of the incident was posted on Facebook where it was viewed by pupils and colleagues.

He also abused and threatened medics trying to help him.

The teacher was later charged by police but failed to tell his employers he was facing a criminal offence.

When the case against him called in court in January, the man, known only as Teacher Z, was convicted and fined £240.

He was granted full anonymity because of his alcohol problems.

The teacher was then hauled before the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

He did not attend the hearing in Edinburgh but his lawyer told a panel he admitted the charges and would consent to his name being struck off the register.

But he will be given an opportunity to return to the classroom if he takes “sufficient steps” to recover from alcohol addiction.

He had blamed his actions on “alcohol misuse”.

In a written ruling, the GTCS panel said: “The panel considered that having regard to the very serious nature of the conduct, the high risk of recurrence and the public interest considerations, that the teacher falls significantly short of the standards expected.

“As the panel determined that the teacher is unfit to teach, it could only direct that the teacher be removed from the register.”

He was granted anonymity by the GTCS after arguing he would suffer if his medical difficulties were made public.
