A US navy officer has been arrested in Japan after reportedly entering an unlocked house early on Saturday morning and drunkenly taking a shower.

The owner found Petty Officer 2nd Class Nathaniel Williams inside his home in Ebina City near the Yokosuka naval base at approximately 5.10am on Saturday.

He told the local newspaper Kanagawa Shimbun Mr Williams walked inside the house unannounced before heading to the bathroom, where he proceeded to take a shower.

The home owner said he woke up to hear water running in his bathroom then found the 27-year-old service member standing in his home naked and appearing intoxicated.

Officials have confirmed Mr Williams serves at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, 15 miles west of Yokohama, and works within the aircraft intermediate maintenance department.

The story was first covered by local news outlets  before being reported by the military news site Stars and Stripes

In a statement, navy spokesperson Sam Samuelson said the US navy is “continuing to monitor and cooperate with local police regarding the alleged illegal residential break-in”.

The officer added: “Of course, the navy takes this matter very seriously and will continue to cooperate fully with local law enforcement as the investigation continues.”

Police arrested Mr Williams on suspicion of trespassing and plan to send the case to local prosecutors.

He was taken into custody after police detected alcohol on his breath and held throughout Saturday evening.

Mr Williams had not appeared to force entry into the home, officials said, which is located on the second floor of an apartment complex.
