Drunken man threatened police in Old Market Square

A drunken man ranted and shouted in a threatening manner around the water fountains in Old Market Square in Nottingham.

Police received information about an agitated drunken man at around 11.35am on June 8 this year.

Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard officers attended the scene and Alexander Brian Kennedy, 27, of Norton Street, Radford, was agitated and intoxicated.

He was slurring his words and swore repeatedly at officers, said Fatima Laher, prosecuting.

After he was advised to leave the area, he continued to swear and tried to provoke people as he walked past, and was generally causing a public nuisance.

He was shouting at the officers and made threats towards them.

He was advised he would be arrested if he continued to make threats.

He then kicked and headbutted a police cage inside a police van.

Kennedy has a number of mental health issues and he was trying to explain to one officer he was heading to see his keyworker at the time.

He pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in Old Market Square when he attended court on Wednesday, June 23.

Magistrates conditionally discharged him for 12 months and ordered he pay court costs of £45 and a victim surcharge of £22.
