Drunk woman arrested at Newcastle International Airport after being disruptive on plane

A drunk woman has been fined after being disruptive on a flight between the Canary Islands and Newcastle.

Linda Tibble accused other passengers of calling her a prostitute while onboard the Jet2 plane one afternoon in July.

But the 44-year-old's booze-fuelled behaviour escalated as the flight progressed and she became more and more disruptive, a court was told.

Tibble's drunken antics prompted the captain of the plane to ring police and officers were waiting upon landing at Newcastle International Airport.

They spoke to Tibble, who initially seemed calm, but she soon turned aggressive when asked if she had any problems with her mental health, North Tyneside Magistrates' Court heard.

She was arrested and has now been fined after pleading guilty to being drunk and an aircraft.

Prosecutors told the court that it was while onboard a Jet2 flight from Tenerife to Newcastle on July 19 this year that Tibble became disruptive and accused other passengers of calling her a prostitute.

The police were called and Tibble, who has one past conviction, was arrested once the plane landed.

Her solicitor, Jonathan Pickford, said Tibble had intended to leave Tenerife on March 23 but had been stuck there after being caught up in the coronavirus travel restrictions.

He added: "As a result of being in Spain so long, the hormone replacement treatment she was on ended, which may have contributed to the change in her behaviour on the flight.

"She accepts she was drunk on the flight after having a small amount of wine."

Mr Pickford said the flight was on the ground when she was arrested and didn't have to be diverted mid-air.

The court heard that Tibble, of no fixed abode but formerly from County Durham, battled with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome after suffering a number of medical issues in the past.

Magistrates fined Tibble £120 and ordered her to pay £85 costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
