Drunk tradesman grabbed glass collector by throat after being asked to leave

A drunk tradesman lashed out at a nightclub glass collector and slammed him into a wall after being asked to leave the venue, a court heard.

Khyle Sargeant, 27, was drinking with a friend in Mansfield on December 20, 2019, when they visited the Canvas nightclub, on Leeming Street.

The pair were told by staff that they were uninvited guests at a private function, before the glass collector stepped in and asked them to leave.

This is when Sargeant, of Dale Lane, Blidworth, lashed out - grabbing him by the throat and pushing him into a wall.

Canvas door-staff stepped in to pull Sargeant off the glass collector, before the police were called and he was arrested on suspicion of assault.

Appearing at Mansfield Magistrates' Court, Sargeant pleaded guilty to assault and was fined £115. He was told to pay £50 compensation, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.

Emma Cornell, mitigating, said Sargeant is a self-employed building tradesman and that the assault was "out of character".

She said: "When he was at the venue, he was initially unaware that he was attending a private event.

"He is thoroughly ashamed of his behaviour that night. He has no previous convictions, he accepts that he was drunk at the time and it does seem somewhat out of character."

Handing out the fine, magistrate Ian Kirk said the attack was "irresponsible".

He added: "We have heard what happened that night. You say you weren't aware that it was a private party, but when you were made aware of the situation, you admit your actions were irresponsible.

"The person who was assaulted was simply doing his job."
