Thomas Cook passenger who drunkenly urinated and vomited in plane seat jailed

An "extremely drunk" Thomas Cook plane passenger who urinated and vomited in his seat after downing vodka and rum has been jailed.

James Petford was on a flight from Birmingham to Egypt when he went on a rampage in front of dozens of other Brits.

The 39-year-old, from King's Norton, Birmingham, lit a rolled cigarette, screamed in another passenger's face and was caught with two bottles of booze he had smuggled on board.

One crew member said Petford - jailed for eight months - was "easily the most disruptive passenger I have had to deal with", Birmingham Live reports.

Petford and his then-partner, Margaret McGuigan, 38, had both previously admitted a charge of being drunk on an aircraft on May 15 last year.

McGuigan was given a 12-month community order along with 60 hours of unpaid work and an order to pay £340 in costs.

The drama began a couple of hours into the four-and-a-half hour flight when a fellow passenger witnessed Petford being hit by McGuigan, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Petford became abusive when cabin crew said one of them would have to move to the back of the plane.

He agreed to move, and a flight attendant discovered a one-litre bottle of vodka, which was confiscated.

He lit a rolled cigarette a short time later and it was taken away from him.

Staff then found a bottle of rum in his bag.

By then, Petford was "extremely drunk" and when he got up to use the toilet he "screamed" in the face of a man exiting the lavatory.

Phillip Brunt, prosecuting, said: "Later, he appeared to lose control of his bladder and also vomited."

As the flight was making its final approach to land, McGuigan refused to sit down, the court heard.

Thomas Cook banned them from flying back with the firm, which went bust in September last year.

A crew member said in a statement: "I had to physically hold him in his seat.

"He is easily the most disruptive passenger I have had to deal with".

Another said: "The whole incident lasted about three to four hours.

"It would have been a horrible way to start your holidays. Their behaviour was totally out of control."

Sentencing, Judge Simon Drew QC said: "Conduct of this sort is extremely serious.

"The reason it is regarded extremely seriously is because of the close proximity of many people in a confined space."

He told Petford: "There can be no doubt you were very drunk indeed.

"You were extremely loud and abusive to passengers and members of the crew."

The judge told McGuigan: "Your behaviour was appalling but perhaps not so appalling as your co accused."

Bernard Porter, for Petford, said his client worked as an engineer for his brother's air cooling business.

Petford accepted his behaviour had been "disgusting", said Mr Porter.

Theresa Hunt, for McGuigan, said she had drunk alcohol because she was a nervous flyer.
